Okinawa offers a radically different Japan experience — subtropical climate, turquoise seas, distinct Ryukyuan culture, and a pace of life that stands in deliberate contrast to mainland Japan. For foreign residents drawn to beach life, diving, tropical nature, and a more relaxed environment, Okinawa is one of Japan’s most compelling long-term bases. It also has a large American military presence and one of Japan’s most established English-language expat communities.

Naha (那覇) — The Capital
Kokusai Dori / Makishi (国際通り・牧志)
Vibe: Naha’s main tourist and shopping street (Kokusai Dori = International Street); 1.6km tourist center but also genuinely used by locals. Makishi Public Market (牧志公設市場) is Okinawa’s most authentic market experience — buy fresh fish, tropical produce, and Okinawan specialties.
- Extremely convenient for everything: shopping, dining, Yui Rail (monorail) access
- 1K: ¥45,000–¥70,000; some older buildings; convenient and affordable
- Yui Rail walkable: Makishi or Asahibashi Station
Tomari / Wakasa (泊・若狭)
Vibe: Quiet residential area west of Kokusai Dori; local neighborhood character without tourist congestion; near Naha Port. Practical and affordable.
- Local Okinawan neighborhood; less international but authentic daily life
- Near Tomari Port for ferry access to outer islands (Kerama, etc.)
- 1K: ¥40,000–¥60,000; reasonable for Naha location
Shuri (首里)
Vibe: Historic district around Shuri Castle (UNESCO World Heritage); hilltop location with great views; more residential and less touristy than central Naha; quiet and characterful.
- Shuri Castle (reconstruction after 2019 fire ongoing); traditional Okinawan stone walls; historic atmosphere
- Yui Rail Shuri Station: 15 min to central Naha (Kencho-mae)
- 2LDK: ¥65,000–¥95,000; slightly pricier than flat areas for the hillside character
Central Okinawa — American Flavor
Chatan / American Village (北谷・アメリカンビレッジ)
Vibe: The most overtly American area in Japan — adjacent to Kadena Air Base; American Village is a retro-American themed shopping and dining area; strong US military off-base community; numerous English-language businesses, American-style restaurants, and bilingual services.
- Most accessible English-language services in Okinawa; effectively bilingual neighborhood
- Sunset Beach; beautiful coastline; excellent snorkeling and diving access
- Very popular with American military families and veterans choosing to stay in Okinawa after service
- 2LDK: ¥70,000–¥120,000; higher due to military housing demand; many furnished options
Okinawa City / Koza (沖縄市・コザ)
Vibe: Historically the entertainment district for US military; strong live music culture (Okinawa jazz-rock fusion, Okinawan folk music); increasingly trendy with young Japanese; authentic and gritty character.
- Koza Music Town: live music venues, record shops, music culture hub
- Most affordable central Okinawa rents: 2LDK from ¥60,000–¥90,000
- Less polished than Chatan; more authentic Okinawan-American cultural blend
Northern Okinawa (Nago / Motobu)
Vibe: Rural, beautiful, and very quiet — ideal for those who want nature, diving, and the real Okinawa without tourist crowds. The Motobu Peninsula has Japan’s best accessible coral reefs on the main island.
- Churaumi Aquarium (世界有数の水族館): World-class aquarium; 15 minutes from Motobu; resident annual pass good value
- Very affordable: 2LDK houses from ¥40,000–¥70,000
- Car essential: public transport minimal in the north
- Remote work community growing here; digital nomads and lifestyle migrants
Outer Islands
- Ishigaki Island (石垣島): Yaeyama Islands; 1 hour by air from Naha; world-class snorkeling and diving; growing expat community; tropical lifestyle; 1K from ¥35,000–¥55,000
- Miyako Island (宮古島): Flat, windy, beautiful beaches; smaller community; windsurfing/kitesurfing culture; very affordable living
- Kerama Islands (慶良間諸島): Ferry from Naha; tiny communities; extraordinary diving; only for those committed to very simple living
Okinawa Practical Notes
- Car essential outside Naha: Outside the Yui Rail corridor, a car or scooter is necessary; driving left on generally good roads
- Typhoon preparation: 5–10 typhoons affect Okinawa per year; all residences should have storm shutters; stock 3–5 days food and water; typhoons are well-forecast and manageable
- Okinawan culture: Distinct from mainland Japan; Uchinaguchi language (Okinawan); Ryukyuan cultural events; Eisa dance (summer/Obon); embrace the difference
- Health note: Okinawa has traditionally one of Japan’s highest longevity rates, associated with diet (goya, purple yam, pork) and lifestyle; the “Okinawa diet” has changed significantly in recent decades
