A Pocket Wi-Fi router (also called a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot or MiFi) is a small device you rent at the airport that creates a personal Wi-Fi network. Connect your phone, tablet, and laptop to one rental device for the duration of your trip. This guide explains how Pocket Wi-Fi works in Japan and how it compares to eSIM.
How Pocket Wi-Fi Works in Japan
You reserve a Pocket Wi-Fi rental before you travel, pick it up at the airport on arrival (counter collection or locker pickup), and return it at the airport before departure. The device creates a 4G/5G hotspot that multiple devices connect to via standard Wi-Fi. Most Japan Pocket Wi-Fi rentals run on Docomo or SoftBank networks with excellent nationwide coverage.
Pocket Wi-Fi vs eSIM
- Multiple devices: Pocket Wi-Fi lets 5–10 devices connect simultaneously — useful for groups or for connecting a laptop as well as a phone.
- Compatibility: Works with any Wi-Fi device. eSIM requires a compatible phone model.
- Physical device: You carry an extra device, need to keep it charged, and must not lose it (replacement fees can be significant).
- Speed: Comparable — both access Japan’s 4G/LTE and 5G networks.
- Cost: Pocket Wi-Fi often works out cheaper per-day for longer trips (7+ days). For short trips with a compatible phone, eSIM may be simpler.
Where to Pick Up
Most Pocket Wi-Fi rental companies offer airport counter pickup at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai International Airport (KIX). Some offer locker pickup, which avoids queuing. Return counters are at the same locations, or by post in some cases.
What to Look For
- Data limits: “Unlimited” plans vary — some throttle after a daily threshold. Check the data policy carefully.
- Rental duration: Plans run by the day. Return on or before your departure date to avoid extra charges.
- Battery life: Most devices last 8–12 hours. Carry a power bank if you plan long days away from power outlets.
- Fees for loss or damage: Read these carefully before renting — costs vary significantly between providers.
Rental Provider Note
We are working on affiliate partnerships with reputable Pocket Wi-Fi rental companies. Specific provider comparisons and booking links will be added when those partnerships are active. In the meantime, the major providers at Japanese airports include IIJmio, Sakura Mobile, Japan Wireless, and others — search for current availability at your arrival airport.
