Japan is an Exceptional Family Destination
Japan is one of the world’s best countries to travel with children. It is safe, clean, and extraordinarily child-friendly — Japanese culture places great value on children and families, and you will receive warm treatment everywhere from stations to restaurants to theme parks. Japan also has world-class child attractions: Universal Studios Japan, Disneyland and DisneySea, Legoland, and dozens of interactive museums are complemented by cultural experiences that genuinely engage children — deer that bow in Nara, robots in Akihabara, capsule toy machines on every street corner, and bullet trains that feel like the future.
Top Kid-Friendly Attractions
Theme Parks
- Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea (Chiba): Two separate parks on the same site; DisneySea is unique to Japan. Book online; FastPass/Premier Access available. Busiest on weekends and Japanese public holidays
- Universal Studios Japan (Osaka): Nintendo World and Harry Potter areas are exceptional. Book Express Pass for Nintendo World well in advance — demand is extreme
- Legoland Japan (Nagoya): Excellent for ages 2–12, less crowded than the major parks
- Fuji-Q Highland (Yamanashi): Near Mt Fuji, famous for extreme roller coasters (for older children/teenagers); Thomas Land area for younger children
- Huis Ten Bosch (Nagasaki): Dutch-themed resort in Kyushu with excellent illuminations — good for families spending time in Kyushu
Interactive Museums
- Miraikan (Tokyo): National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. Robots (including ASIMO and Otonaroid), space exploration, and hands-on science. Excellent for ages 8+
- Kidzania Tokyo/Osaka: Children’s role-play city where kids can be doctors, pilots, police officers, chefs, and more. Ages 3–15. Very popular; book well ahead
- Pokémon Center stores: Retail/experience stores in major cities (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama); not interactive but an essential stop for Pokémon fans
- Cup Noodles Museum (Yokohama): Children create their own custom instant ramen. Booking required for the main workshop
- teamLab Planets (Tokyo): Immersive digital art. Children under 3 are free; younger children may find some installations overwhelming
Animals and Outdoors
- Nara deer park: Free-roaming deer that bow for crackers — magical for children. Supervise small children closely during peak rut season (October–November)
- Ueno Zoo (Tokyo): Japan’s oldest zoo; giant pandas are the star attraction. Book giant panda viewing slots online
- Asahiyama Zoo (Hokkaido): Famous for its creative animal enclosures — polar bear pool with underwater viewing tunnel, penguin promenade. Excellent in winter
- Aquarium visits: Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan (giant whale sharks), Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (second-largest tank in the world), Sumida Aquarium (Tokyo, smaller but excellent jellyfish)
Practical Family Travel Tips
Transport with Children
- Children’s Shinkansen tickets: Half price for ages 6–11; under 6 travel free (one child per adult seat allowed; additional young children half price)
- IC cards for children: Children’s IC cards (blue design) are half price on public transport. Buy at major station ticket offices
- Pushchairs/strollers: Japan is generally stroller-friendly with elevators at most stations and ramps at modern facilities. Historical temple sites with stone steps are less accessible; many families use baby carriers for temple days
- Priority seating: Silver seats at the front of train cars are reserved for elderly, disabled, and pregnant passengers; children do not need priority seats
Food for Children
- Japanese food is generally mild and child-friendly. Plain rice (gohan), udon noodles, yakitori, edamame, and karaage (fried chicken) are universally loved by children
- Conveyor belt sushi (kaiten-zushi) restaurants are ideal for families — children can choose visually and small plates let you order in small amounts
- Convenience stores stock excellent children’s lunch boxes, onigiri, and snacks at all hours
- Family restaurant chains (Denny’s Japan, Gusto, Saizeriya) have dedicated children’s menus and high chairs at most locations
Baby and Toddler Essentials
- Nappies/diapers: Japanese brand nappies (Merries, Goo.N) are excellent quality and available at every pharmacy and convenience store. Slightly smaller sizing than Western brands
- Baby food: Extensive range at pharmacies and supermarkets. Japanese baby food is high quality; many stores stock Western brands in tourist areas
- Baby rooms (akachan休憩室): Department stores and shopping malls have excellent baby rooms with changing tables, nursing rooms, and microwave access. Train stations have changing facilities. Look for the baby-and-parent symbol
- Formula milk: Powdered formula widely available. Convenience store hot water dispensers allow on-the-spot bottle preparation
Best Cities for Families
- Tokyo: Disneyland, DisneySea, Miraikan, teamLab, Ueno Zoo, Akihabara, Pokémon Centres, and endless arcade centres (game centres)
- Osaka: Universal Studios Japan, Osaka Aquarium, Canal City, and excellent food
- Kyoto: Nishiki Market tasting, kimono rental, Fushimi Inari hike, deer in Nara (easy day trip)
- Nara: The deer alone make it worthwhile for most children. Easy day trip from Kyoto or Osaka
- Hakone: Ropeway, volcanic valley, Lake Ashi boat ride, and open-air museum — all compelling for children
