Japan has an exceptional theme park landscape — from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to the world’s first dedicated Studio Ghibli park. This guide covers Japan’s major theme parks, what makes each distinct, and practical visiting tips.
Universal Studios Japan (Osaka)
One of the world’s best Universal Studios parks; the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the Nintendo World (Super Nintendo World) zones are Japan exclusives or significantly larger than their international counterparts. Thrilling rides, elaborate theming, and some of Japan’s best theme park food. Book express passes well in advance — sold online and sell out weeks ahead. Open year-round.
Ghibli Park (Nagakute, Aichi)
Opened in 2022, Ghibli Park is not a conventional theme park — there are no rides. Instead it is a series of themed areas recreating environments from Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, and other Ghibli films, built within Expo 2005 Commemorative Park. Tickets require advance booking via the Ghibli Park official lottery system (released monthly). Extremely popular; tickets regularly sell out. Near Nagakute-Expo-Kaijo-Nishi station on the Linimo line from Nagoya.
Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea
Tokyo DisneySea is widely considered the best Disney park in the world — uniquely designed from the ground up for the Tokyo Resort. Fantasy Springs (2024) adds a new Frozen, Tangled, and Peter Pan area. Tokyo Disneyland is the closest to the original California park in concept. Both require advance ticket purchase via Tokyo Disney Resort app; single-day tickets without date selection are not sold.
Fuji-Q Highland (Yamanashi)
A thrill-ride park at the base of Mount Fuji; home to several world-record holding roller coasters including Takabisha (steepest drop angle in the world at the time of opening) and Eejanaika. Mount Fuji views from the rides are spectacular on clear days.
Huis Ten Bosch (Nagasaki)
A Dutch-themed resort town in Nagasaki; illumination events are Japan’s largest, covering 152 hectares with seasonal light art. Tulip season (spring) and autumn illuminations are the peak periods. More resort than theme park; stay overnight to fully appreciate the evening illuminations.
Sanrio Puroland (Tokyo)
Hello Kitty and Sanrio character indoor theme park in Tama; entirely indoors so weather-proof. Strong adult fan base; evening events with elaborate stage shows and character interaction. Popular for groups and pop culture enthusiasts.
