Japan’s postal and delivery infrastructure is exceptional — packages typically arrive next-day within cities, and the post office offers services well beyond mail. Understanding how the system works saves time and frustration for new residents.
Japan Post (日本郵便) — What It Offers
Japan Post (JP) is the national postal service and one of the world’s largest financial institutions. Services include:
- Standard mail (普通郵便): Letters, postcards, small packages
- Yu-Pack (ゆうパック): Parcel delivery service, trackable, nationwide
- Yu-Mail (ゆうメール): Books, magazines, and CDs at reduced rates
- Express mail (速達): Priority delivery, +¥290 on standard rates
- International mail: EMS (express), SAL (economy), airmail, and surface mail
- JP Bank (ゆうちょ銀行): Banking services, ATMs, money transfers
- Kannpo Life Insurance: Life insurance products
Post offices are found in virtually every neighborhood. Hours vary: main branches open weekdays 9 AM–7 PM and Saturdays 9 AM–5 PM; smaller branches may close at 5 PM on weekdays and not open weekends. Convenience store counters and JP Bank ATMs supplement post office access outside hours.
Yamato Transport (ヤマト運輸 / クロネコヤマト)
Yamato is Japan’s largest private courier and the gold standard for domestic parcel delivery:
- Ta-Q-BIN (宅急便): Their core parcel service. Trackable, reliable, next-day or same-day delivery in most urban areas.
- Cool Ta-Q-BIN (クール宅急便): Temperature-controlled delivery for food, medical items.
- Compact Ta-Q-BIN: For small items up to 25cm × 20cm × 5cm, ¥594 flat rate.
- Delivery time selection: Choose morning, afternoon, evening, or specific 2-hour windows.
Yamato has service centers (ヤマト営業所) nationwide and uses FamilyMart as pickup/drop-off points. Their app (クロネコメンバーズ) enables package tracking and delivery time changes.
Sagawa Express (佐川急便)
Japan’s second major private courier, strong in business-to-business logistics:
- Fly-Jin: Small parcel service at competitive rates
- E-Commerce shipping: Preferred by many online retailers
- Often used by Amazon Japan for certain packages
Receiving Packages — The Redelivery System
If you’re not home when a delivery is attempted, the courier leaves an Inryu (不在票 / 不在通知書) — a missed delivery slip. This is important:
- The slip lists the courier company, tracking number, and attempted delivery time
- Use the QR code or URL to schedule redelivery — most services now have English-language online redelivery scheduling
- Alternatively, call the number on the slip (Japanese phone required in most cases)
- You can also choose konbini pickup for Yamato and some JP packages
Packages are held for 7–14 days before return to sender. Act quickly on redelivery slips.
Amazon Japan Delivery
Amazon.co.jp uses multiple carriers: Yamato, Sagawa, Japan Post, and Amazon’s own delivery network (Amazon Hub Locker and Amazon Flex drivers). Key features:
- Amazon Hub Locker (オープンロッカー): Self-service lockers at train stations and konbini. Great for missed deliveries.
- Konbini pickup: 7-Eleven and Lawson Amazon counters
- Prime: Same-day or next-day delivery in major urban areas
- Amazon.co.jp has an English-language interface — easy to use without Japanese
Sending Packages Abroad
Sending packages internationally from Japan:
- EMS (国際スピード郵便): Japan Post’s international express service. Fast (3–5 days to most countries), trackable, insured. Available at post offices.
- SAL (船便扱い航空便): Economy air service, slower than EMS, cheaper. Currently suspended to some destinations — check Japan Post website.
- Airmail (航空便): Standard international air. Slower and cheaper than EMS.
- DHL / FedEx / UPS: Available in Japan for business and personal shipping. Generally more expensive than EMS but sometimes faster to specific regions.
International customs forms are required. Japan Post offices have multilingual forms and some staff who can assist in English. Declare contents accurately — under-declaration of value is a customs violation.
Post Office Banking (ゆうちょ銀行)
JP Bank (Yucho) is worth knowing even if you use another bank:
- ATMs in every post office and many konbini — useful when your main bank’s ATM isn’t nearby
- No ATM fees during business hours at post office ATMs (fees apply outside hours)
- International remittance via Japan Post — available but slower than specialist transfer services
- Account opening available to foreign residents with residence card — simpler process than some commercial banks
Postal rates, delivery services, and office hours are subject to change. Verify current rates and availability at japanpost.jp or directly at your local post office.
