Japan’s online retail ecosystem is highly developed — fast delivery, excellent consumer protection, and a vast range of products. Understanding the major platforms helps you shop efficiently and avoid surprises around payment methods, delivery, and returns.
Amazon Japan (Amazon.co.jp)
Amazon Japan operates much like Amazon globally, with some Japan-specific features:
- English interface: Amazon.co.jp has a full English-language interface. The easiest platform for non-Japanese readers.
- Prime membership: ¥600/month or ¥5,900/year. Includes same-day and next-day delivery for Prime-eligible items in major cities, Prime Video Japan (extensive library including Japanese content), Prime Music, and Prime Reading.
- Delivery speed: Prime same-day delivery in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka available for orders placed before cutoff times (typically 10 AM for same-day).
- Payment: Credit card, debit card, konbini payment, Amazon gift cards, bank transfer. IC card payment (Amazon Cash) also available.
- Returns: Generous return policy, similar to global Amazon. Most items returnable within 30 days.
- Marketplace sellers: Amazon Japan includes third-party marketplace sellers alongside direct Amazon stock — check seller ratings before buying from marketplace.
Amazon Japan is the simplest entry point for online shopping in Japan. For English-speaking new residents, start here.
Rakuten Ichiba (楽天市場)
Rakuten is Japan’s largest domestic e-commerce platform — a marketplace of independent shops rather than a single retailer. Rakuten’s model is fundamentally different from Amazon:
- Individual shops set their own prices, shipping policies, and return conditions — more variety but less consistency
- The Rakuten point economy is the key appeal — purchases earn Rakuten points (typically 1% base, boosted to 3–10%+ through campaigns and special purchase days)
- Rakuten Super Sale and Super Deal: Periodic sale events with significant discounts and point multipliers. The biggest events (0 and 5 days of the month, quarterly Super Sale) are when regular Rakuten shoppers stock up
- Payment: Rakuten Card (integrated) earns highest point rates. Also accepts PayPay, credit cards, konbini payment
- Interface: Primarily Japanese. Google Translate works on the site but shopping experience requires more Japanese comfort than Amazon
Best for: Daily goods, food and beverages, cosmetics, clothing, books. The point accumulation is genuinely valuable for regular shoppers.
Yahoo! Shopping (Yahoo!ショッピング)
Yahoo Shopping is Rakuten’s main competitor in the marketplace model:
- No platform fee for shops, leading to competitive pricing on some items
- Earns PayPay points — integrates with PayPay ecosystem
- Paypay Mall: Higher-tier certified shops within Yahoo Shopping, with stronger buyer protections
- Yahoo Auction (ヤフオク) integration for second-hand items
ZOZOTOWN — Japan’s Fashion Marketplace
For clothing and fashion, ZOZOTOWN is Japan’s dominant online fashion platform:
- Carries virtually every Japanese fashion brand — both high street and premium
- Size visualization tools and comprehensive size charts
- ZOZOFIT body measurement service for fit recommendations
- Good sale sections (タイムセール) for discounted branded fashion
- Returns accepted within 30 days
Delivery and Receiving Packages
Japan’s delivery infrastructure is exceptional — see the separate Japan Delivery Services guide for full detail. Key points for online shopping:
- Specify your delivery time window at checkout — most platforms allow this
- If not home, packages go to your building’s宅配ボックス (automated locker) if equipped, or a missed delivery slip (不在票) is left
- Konbini pickup (コンビニ受取) is available on most platforms — especially useful for those without a fixed schedule at home
- Amazon Hub Locker locations at 7-Eleven stores enable self-service pickup
Consumer Protection in Japan
Online shopping in Japan benefits from strong consumer protection:
- Credit card chargebacks are effective as a last resort for unresolved disputes
- The Act on Specified Commercial Transactions requires clear disclosure of seller information and return policies
- Rakuten and Yahoo Shopping have platform-level buyer protection for non-delivery and significantly-not-as-described claims
- Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee applies to marketplace sellers on Amazon.co.jp
Useful Shopping Apps
- Amazon Japan app: Full English interface, best for quick orders

- ZOZOTOWN app: Fashion shopping, wish-list and sale alert features
