Northern Okinawa (the Motobu Peninsula and Yambaru forest area) offers the island’s most dramatic natural scenery — limestone sea cliffs, subtropical forest, and the world’s finest ocean-view aquarium. The drive north from Naha on Route 58 along the west coast, passing US base perimeters and resort hotels, opens into more rural Okinawa as you approach Motobu.
Cape Manzamo
Cape Manzamo is Okinawa’s most iconic coastal viewpoint — a flat limestone headland at the edge of low sea cliffs, with a natural rock arch called the elephant trunk (a rock formation resembling an elephant drinking from the sea) and sweeping views of the East China Sea. At sunset, the combination of orange sky, dark sea, and white limestone is the definitive Okinawa postcard image. The cape is fully accessible on foot (2-minute walk from the parking area) and has a small shopping area with Okinawan souvenirs. Located on the Motobu Peninsula’s western point, it is conveniently on the route to Ocean Expo Park.
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium at Ocean Expo Park is one of the world’s great aquariums — the Kuroshio Sea tank (7,500-cubic-metre main tank, 8.2m deep acrylic panel) is the second-largest aquarium tank in the world and holds three whale sharks and two manta rays alongside thousands of other species in a single enclosed ecosystem. The scale is genuinely extraordinary — the whale sharks (5–8m) swim lazy circuits while manta rays glide overhead. The tank’s acrylic viewing panel (60m wide, 8.2m tall) is the largest single-panel aquarium window in the world. Admission ¥2,180; combined tickets with the adjacent outdoor manatee and dolphin shows available.
Emerald Beach & Ocean Expo Park
Emerald Beach is the free public beach within Ocean Expo Park — Okinawa’s most consistently photographed beach, with white sand, a breakwater creating calm swimming conditions, and the forested hillside of Motobu as a backdrop. The beach is free to use; facilities (showers, lockers, beach chairs) are available for rent. Ocean Expo Park also contains a botanical garden, native Okinawan village reconstruction, and the Okinawa Prefectural Sea Turtle Research Center (rehabilitation tanks with visiting loggerhead turtles).
- Ocean Expo Park is 2 hours by car from Naha or 1.5 hours from Nago by Route 449.
- The aquarium is extremely busy on weekends and public holidays — arrive when it opens (08:30) for the clearest views of the whale sharks before midday crowds.
- The Okinawa Fruits Land tropical garden near Nago has tasting tours of dragonfruit, starfruit, and papaya grown in outdoor greenhouses.
