Japan is an exceptional long-distance cycling destination. A network of dedicated cycling routes, well-maintained roads, abundant convenience stores for resupply, and the extraordinary scenery of islands, coastlines, and mountain valleys make Japan one of Asia’s premier cycling touring countries.
Why Japan for Cycle Touring
- Convenience store infrastructure: A konbini every 5–20km on most routes; water, food, toilets, phone charging — a safety net that doesn’t exist in most countries
- Road quality: Generally excellent; even rural roads are well-surfaced; shoulder lanes common on national routes
- Cycling-specific facilities: Dedicated cycling rest stops (サイクルオアシス) on major routes; bike wash stations, repair tools, air pumps
- Train integration: Rinko (bagged bicycle) allowed on many trains and local JR services; enables one-way routes and bailout if needed
- Bicycle-friendly accommodation: Many guesthouses, hostels, and some ryokan have cycle storage and welcome cyclists
Iconic Routes
Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道)
Japan’s most famous cycling route and one of the best in Asia. 70km connecting Onomichi (Hiroshima) to Imabari (Ehime) across six islands via the Seto Inland Sea via bridges. Dedicated cycling paths on every bridge. Spectacular ocean views, citrus orchards, ferry ports. Suitable for all fitness levels; one day (strong cyclists) to three days (leisurely with island exploration). Rent bikes at both ends (Giant Store Onomichi is famous); return anywhere on the route. Strongly recommended for all Japan residents — this is a bucket-list route.
Biwa-ko Cycling Road (琵琶湖サイクリングロード)
235km circumnavigation of Lake Biwa (Japan’s largest lake) in Shiga Prefecture. Dedicated cycling path for much of the route. Flat terrain; excellent for a 2–3 day leisurely loop. Accessible from Kyoto and Osaka. “Biwako Issen” (全線) refers to completing the full circuit.
Tokyo to Osaka: Tokai-do Route
500km following the historic Tokaido road from Tokyo to Osaka along Japan’s Pacific coast. Mix of cycling paths and roads. 5–7 days for fit cyclists. Passes through Yokohama, Shizuoka, Nagoya, Kyoto. Route planning apps and GPS tracks available from cycling communities.
Hokkaido: Furano-Biei Flower Road Area
Gentle rolling terrain between Asahikawa and Furano; lavender fields (July); flower fields (summer); open landscape very different from Honshu cycling. Excellent for a 2–3 day touring loop. Combine with Daisetsuzan highland cycling if fitness permits.
Kyushu Cycling Route (九州一周)
Circumnavigation of Kyushu island: approximately 1,400km full circuit; 10–14 days. Passes hot spring towns, rural fishing villages, volcanic landscapes. Less trafficked roads than Honshu; excellent ryokan and minshuku circuit.
Awa Odori Coast: Shikoku Island
Shikoku’s 88 Temple Pilgrimage Route (1,200km) can be cycled in 2–3 weeks; shorter coastal stretches excellent for weekend touring. Unique cultural element of participating in the ohenro pilgrimage tradition.
Planning a Cycle Tour
Route Planning Apps
- Komoot: Excellent Japan coverage; turn-by-turn navigation; surface type awareness
- Ride with GPS: Widely used among touring cyclists; import GPX tracks from Japanese cycling community sites
- Garmin Connect / Wahoo: For those with GPS devices
- Yahoo! カーナビ cycling mode: Japan-specific; handles small roads well; available in Japanese
Accommodation
- Cycling-friendly guesthouses: Explicitly welcome cyclists; indoor bike storage; drying facilities; often run by cycling enthusiasts
- Business hotels: Adequate; usually have bicycle parking; ask about indoor storage for expensive bikes
- Rider Houses (ライダーハウス): Very cheap (¥500–¥1,500/night) accommodation originally for motorbike tourists; many welcome cyclists; basic but friendly
- Wild camping: Technically possible at designated camping areas; true wild camping is legally restricted but tolerated in some rural areas — camp discretely, leave no trace
Shipping Your Bike (自転車 宅配)
Yamato Transport (ヤマト運輸) and Sagawa Express ship bicycles in boxes for ¥1,500–¥3,000; useful for one-way routes. Many bike shops will pack your bike for shipping. Alternatively, some cycle hire shops offer one-way rental between route start and end points.
Gear for Japanese Cycle Touring
- Panniers or bikepacking bags: Either works; bikepacking setup lighter and more aerodynamic; panniers easier for daily access to items
- Rain gear: Essential; typhoon season (July–October) can bring sudden heavy rain; waterproof jacket and shoe covers minimum
- Repair kit: Inner tubes (carry 2–3), tire levers, mini pump, chain lube, multi-tool; most towns have bicycle shops for serious repairs but remote areas do not
- Lights: Front and rear; legally required at night; rechargeable USB lights most practical
- Cycling computers: Helpful for navigation; Wahoo ELEMNT and Garmin Edge have good Japan map support
Community and Resources
- Strava Japan segments: Find popular local routes and KOM challenges
- Cycling-specific hotels / VC Hotel program: Growing network of bicycle-friendly hotels and ryokan recognizing the market
- Cyclo-tourism Japan: Expat cycling groups in Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities; group rides for all fitness levels; great way to meet people and discover local routes
