January
Cold and clear in most of Honshu (Tokyo 5–10°C). Highlights: Hatsumode shrine visits through Jan 3; Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival (Jan 15); Sapporo snow festival preparation; excellent koyo-less views of temples. Crowd level: low after Jan 4. Cost: low (except New Year week). Best for: uncrowded Kyoto and Nara, skiing, onsen.
February
Japan’s coldest month; snow possible in Tokyo; Hokkaido deep winter. Highlights: Sapporo Snow Festival (early Feb); Yokote Kamakura (Feb); Setsubun (Feb 3). Crowd level: very low at most tourist sites. Cost: low. Best for: budget travel, winter festivals, Hokkaido skiing.
March
Temperatures rise; early cherry blossoms in Kyushu by late March. Highlights: sakura begins (south Japan late March); Hinamatsuri (Doll’s Festival, March 3). Crowd level: rising with cherry blossom anticipation. Cost: rising. Best for: early sakura watchers, comfortable shoulder season travel.
April
Prime cherry blossom month for most of Honshu (Tokyo peak typically late March–early April). Highlights: hanami nationwide; Golden Week (late April–early May). Crowd level: very high during sakura peak and Golden Week. Cost: highest of the year during Golden Week. Best for: sakura — unavoidable crowds are part of the experience.
May
Excellent weather; post-Golden Week significantly quieter. Highlights: cherry blossoms in Hokkaido (late April–early May); fresh greenery (shinryoku); Hakata Dontaku festival (Fukuoka, May 3–4). Crowd level: moderate after May 6. Cost: moderate. Best for: best weather-to-crowd ratio of the year.
June
Rainy season begins (except Hokkaido). Highlights: hydrangea in bloom; Gion Matsuri preparations begin. Crowd level: low — the most underrated month for travel. Cost: low. Best for: Hokkaido travel, budget travel nationwide, hydrangea photography.
July–August
Hot and humid; typhoon risk. Highlights: fireworks festivals; Gion Matsuri (July); Obon festivals including Awa Odori and Nebuta (August). Crowd level: high during Obon (mid-August). Cost: moderate (Obon peak: high). Best for: festivals, Okinawa beaches, Hokkaido (coolest region in summer).
September–October
Typhoon peak in September; October excellent weather. Highlights: early koyo in Hokkaido/mountains (October); Jidai Matsuri (Kyoto, Oct 22). Crowd level: moderate. Cost: moderate. Best for: comfortable temperatures, early autumn foliage, outdoor hiking.
November
Peak koyo season across most of Honshu. Highlights: autumn foliage nationwide, peaking in Kyoto November 18–28 in typical years; Shichi-Go-San (Nov 15). Crowd level: very high at foliage hot spots. Cost: high. Best for: koyo — spectacular despite crowds.
December
Quiet and cold; Christmas illuminations; year-end atmosphere. Highlights: Joya no Kane (Dec 31); illumination events in Tokyo and Osaka. Crowd level: low until Dec 28; very high Dec 29–31. Cost: low until Dec 28. Best for: uncrowded temple visits, winter scenery, onsen season opening.
