Japan’s autumn foliage (紅葉, koyo) rivals cherry blossom season in beauty and cultural significance — some argue it surpasses it. The combination of Japanese maple (momiji), ginkgo, and beech trees turning vivid red, orange, and yellow against traditional architecture and mountain landscapes creates some of the most photographed scenes in the world.
Understanding Koyo Season
Koyo travels from north to south as temperatures drop — the reverse direction of cherry blossoms. The Japan Meteorological Corporation (and multiple apps) release koyo forecasts from late September. Peak color (見頃, migoro) for most of Honshu falls between late October and late November.
Timing by Region (Approximate)
- Hokkaido: Late September–mid-October (one of Japan’s earliest and most dramatic)
- Tohoku (mountains): Early–mid-October
- Nikko, Oze (Tochigi/Gunma): Mid–late October
- Tokyo and Kanto lowlands: Mid-November–early December (ginkgo lasts into December)
- Kyoto and Kansai: Mid–late November
- Kyushu: Late November–December
Mountain elevations peak 2–4 weeks before surrounding lowlands — a single autumn can be chased from highlands to valleys for weeks of peak viewing.

One of Japan’s most accessible spectacular koyo destinations from Tokyo (2 hours by Tobu Nikko Line): UNESCO shrine complex, mountain gorges, Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji — all surrounded by brilliant autumn color. Peak: mid-October at higher elevation, late October at shrine level. Extremely crowded on peak weekends — consider weekdays.

Night Illuminations (夜のライトアップ)
Major koyo spots offer evening illumination events (ライトアップ, raitoabu): colored lights through maple canopies after dark. Kyoto’s Eikan-do, Tofuku-ji, and Kiyomizudera all run November evening events. Tickets sell out — book ahead. The combination of reflected red maples in dark ponds is uniquely stunning.

Practical Tips
- Crowds: Kyoto and Nikko are overwhelmingly crowded on peak weekends; visit weekdays or choose 6–7am for photography before crowds arrive
- Accommodation: Book ryokan in Kyoto and Nikko 2–3 months ahead for November peak; prices are significantly higher than off-season
- Seasonal food: Chestnut (kuri) sweets, new rice dishes, matsutake mushroom dishes, imo (sweet potato) products — autumn food is exceptional in Japan
- Photography: Overcast days often produce better color saturation than bright sun; morning light and reflection shots reward early arrival
