Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka is one of Asia’s highest-attended theme parks, drawing over 14 million visitors annually. The park combines Universal’s global blockbuster IP with Japan-exclusive attractions and a food culture that takes themed dining more seriously than any Universal park elsewhere in the world. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the park’s centerpiece and remains among the most immersive themed environments ever built.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
USJ’s Harry Potter area is a faithful recreation of Hogsmeade village from the films — snow-capped rooftops, the Three Broomsticks pub, Ollivanders wand shop, and the looming facade of Hogwarts Castle. The centerpiece ride, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (inside the castle), combines physical sets, screens, and movement to deliver a genuinely breathtaking experience. Butterbeer (non-alcoholic, sweet, butterscotch-flavored) is sold at several stands; the frozen version is the popular choice. Wands sold at Ollivanders interact with hidden markers throughout the area to trigger effects — a major draw for younger visitors.
Super Nintendo World
Super Nintendo World, opened in 2021 ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, is the world’s first Nintendo-themed land and currently exists only at USJ (a second opened at Universal Hollywood in 2023). The immersive area recreates the Mushroom Kingdom with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser’s Castle. The flagship ride, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, uses AR headsets to overlay game elements onto physical sets. Power-Up Bands (¥3,500) purchased in the area function as interactive wristbands that unlock in-area challenges via NFC touchpoints throughout the land.
Other Key Attractions
Beyond the two flagship lands, USJ’s notable attractions include The Flying Dinosaur — Japan’s longest roller coaster and among Asia’s most thrilling, with a prone “flying” position that puts riders face-down over the track — Hollywood Dream: The Ride (high-speed coaster with optional backwards-facing seats), and Minion Park, which draws enormous family crowds. Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, and other anime IP appear in limited-time collaboration events that cycle regularly and are major draws for Japanese visitors.
Express Pass
USJ’s Express Pass system (¥4,800–¥12,800+ per person depending on date and included attractions) grants single-use fast lane access to selected attractions. The premium “7” pass covers the seven top attractions including Harry Potter Forbidden Journey and Flying Dinosaur; on busy days this is essentially mandatory to avoid 2-3 hour queues. Passes sell out online well before busy days — buy in advance. Alternatively, arrive at park opening (gates open 30 minutes early) and run directly to Harry Potter or Flying Dinosaur before crowds build.
Food & Dining
USJ’s food quality is a genuine highlight. Three Broomsticks inside the Wizarding World serves British pub food — shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, and a full English breakfast at park opening. Toadstool Cafe in Super Nintendo World serves Nintendo-themed meals including a mushroom-topped burger and Yoshi-shaped curry bread. The park food culture takes presentation and theming seriously; Instagram-friendly character bento boxes, themed drinks, and seasonal limited items are major draws in their own right.
