Arashiyama, on Kyoto’s western outskirts, is one of Japan’s most visited destinations — a combination of towering bamboo groves, the city’s finest Zen garden, a scenic river valley, and the atmospheric Sagano area. Though extremely crowded at peak times, Arashiyama rewards visitors who arrive early or time their visit for shoulder season.
Getting There
From central Kyoto: Randen tram from Shijo-Omiya to Arashiyama (20 minutes, ¥250); JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station (15 minutes, ¥240 — JR Pass covered); Hankyu Arashiyama Line from Katsura to Arashiyama Station (10 minutes, ¥190). The JR route deposits you nearest the bamboo grove; Hankyu is most convenient from central Osaka.
The Bamboo Grove
The Sagano Chikurin no Komichi (Bamboo Grove Path) runs approximately 400 metres between Tenryu-ji’s north gate and Okochi Sanso villa. The towering stalks — some 20+ metres high — create a cathedral-like atmosphere, filtering light and swaying in wind with an unusual sound. The most photogenic time: early morning (06:00–08:00) before the path fills with visitors. The grove is publicly accessible and free.
Tenryu-ji Garden
Tenryu-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage Zen temple (1339) with what many consider Kyoto’s finest garden: a chisen-kaiyu (pond-stroll) design attributed to the great garden designer Muso Soseki, using the Arashiyama hills as shakkei (borrowed scenery) background. The pond, raked gravel areas, and stone arrangements change character through each season. Garden admission ¥500 (or ¥1,000 for temple buildings).
Sagano & Surrounding Area
Beyond the bamboo grove, the Sagano Scenic Railway (Torokko train) runs 7.3 kilometres through the Hozu River gorge — a 25-minute open-air ride through forested canyon (¥880 each way; book in advance for peak seasons). Okochi Sanso villa and garden, home of the silent film actor Okochi Denjiro, offers panoramic views of Kyoto and Arashiyama for ¥1,000 (includes matcha and wagashi). Tenzan no Yu onsen, a short walk from the main area, offers day-use bathing to complete the visit.
- Arrive before 08:00 for the bamboo grove; after 10:00 it becomes genuinely difficult to walk freely.
- The riverside area near Togetsukyo Bridge is excellent for late-afternoon light and cherry blossom season.
- The Arashiyama Monkey Park offers views of central Kyoto from the hillside — a 20-minute uphill walk (¥550).
