Seven days in Japan is enough to cover Tokyo and the Kyoto–Osaka corridor — the two most iconic travel regions. This guide goes beyond a standard day-by-day outline: it includes a realistic budget table, decision paths by traveler type, and the practical details that first-time visitors usually don’t discover until they’re already there.
Which Version Is Right for You?
Seven days means different things depending on who you are. Choose the path that fits your situation.

Before You Go
- Check entry requirements at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs — most nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days
- Get a SIM card or eSIM before arrival — airport SIMs are available but pricier
- Load an IC card (Suica or PASMO) on arrival — works on virtually every train and bus, and at convenience stores
- Decide on JR Pass vs point-to-point tickets before departure — the pass must be activated outside Japan at an authorized dealer
- Book accommodation early for cherry blossom (late March–mid April) and autumn foliage (late October–November) — Kyoto sells out months in advance
- Download Google Maps, NAVITIME, and a translation app (Google Translate offline) before landing
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Most international flights arrive at Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND). Allow 1.5–2 hours to clear immigration and customs. Narita Express (N’EX, ~¥3,070) or Limousine Bus connects to central Tokyo. Haneda: Tokyo Monorail (~¥500, 25 minutes). If you arrive early enough, walk around your neighbourhood to beat jet lag. A convenience store dinner is a perfect low-cost introduction to Japanese food.
Start at Shibuya Crossing — stand at street level for the crossing itself (the Starbucks observatory view is overrated). Harajuku’s Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine are immediately adjacent — the contrast is dramatic. Afternoon: Shinjuku — Kabukicho, Golden Gai (dozens of tiny bars), or east exit shopping. Evening: Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) for yakitori under the train tracks. Family variant: TeamLab Borderless (book online in advance, ~¥3,200/adult).
Morning: Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa — arrive before 8am to avoid crowds. Browse Nakamise Street for traditional souvenirs; Kappabashi kitchen district is nearby for unusual gifts. Afternoon: Akihabara for electronics and anime culture, or Ueno Park (Tokyo National Museum, ¥1,000; most others ¥600–1,000). Evening: ramen in Ueno or Akihabara. Repeater tip: Substitute Senso-ji for Yanaka — Tokyo’s best-preserved pre-war neighbourhood.
Nikko (2 hours, Tobu Nikko Line from Asakusa, ~¥1,360): ornate Tosho-gu shrine and mountain scenery. Kamakura (1 hour, JR Yokosuka Line from Shinjuku, ~¥920): the 13-metre Great Buddha, Hasedera Temple, and hiking trails. Leave by 8am, return by 7pm. JR Pass covers Kamakura; Nikko requires a separate Tobu ticket. Family variant: Tokyo DisneySea (book dining and popular rides immediately at gates) or Odaiba family area.
Hikari Shinkansen, Tokyo Station to Kyoto: ~2h15m, ~¥13,700 one-way. Nozomi is faster but not JR Pass-eligible. Stow luggage at your hotel or use a coin locker at Kyoto Station (¥400–700/day). Afternoon: Fushimi Inari — arrive before 3pm; walk the lower torii gates (30 min minimum), or the full summit (2–3 hours). Evening: Gion district for dinner — try a counter kaiseki set (¥5,000–10,000).
Morning: Arashiyama — Bamboo Grove (arrive 7am), Tenryu-ji Garden (~¥500). Afternoon: Kinkaku-ji (¥500) and Ryoan-ji Zen garden (¥600). Or spend the full day in eastern Kyoto: Kiyomizudera (¥500), Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka stone lanes, Maruyama Park. Kyoto rewards slow walking — resist cramming in more than 3 major sites per day. Repeater tip: Nishiki Market + Fushimi only; add a Nara day trip (45 min by Kintetsu, ¥690).
Osaka is 15 min from Kyoto by Shinkansen or 30 min by Hankyu express (¥410, not JR Pass). Morning: Dotonbori for takoyaki (¥600–800) and street food; Osaka Castle (free grounds, ¥600 for the tower). Afternoon: Shinsekai (kushikatsu from ¥150/skewer) or Shinsaibashi shopping. Departing from KIX: allow 90 min from central Osaka (Haruka express ~¥2,380, or Nankai Rapīt ~¥1,290). Returning to Tokyo: Shin-Osaka to Tokyo Shinkansen ~2.5h (~¥13,870).
Repeater Variant: Hiroshima + Miyajima
For those who have done Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka at least once:
- Day 5: Tokyo → Hiroshima by Hikari Shinkansen (~4 hours, ~¥18,480 or JR Pass). Afternoon at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum (¥200). This is not a site to rush.
- Day 6: Miyajima Island — JR ferry from Hiroshima (covered by JR Pass). Itsukushima Shrine, floating torii gate, hike Mt. Misen. Return to Hiroshima or continue to Kyoto.
- Day 7: One full day in Kyoto — focus on Arashiyama or eastern Kyoto only. Depart from KIX/ITM or loop back to Tokyo.
Practical Notes
- JR Pass: 7-day ordinary = ¥50,000. Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka round-trip Shinkansen alone = ~¥55,000 for two adults. Add day trips and it pays off quickly. Calculate your specific route.
- SIM / data: Tourist SIMs (IIJmio, airport counters) give 3–15GB for ¥1,500–3,500/week. eSIMs can be activated before departure.
- Cash: Carry ¥20,000–30,000 at all times. Seven Bank (7-Eleven) and Japan Post ATMs accept Visa/Mastercard/Cirrus reliably.
- Footwear: You will walk 15,000–25,000 steps/day. Break in shoes before the trip.
- Book early: Sumo tournaments, TeamLab, popular ramen/sushi counters, and Kyoto seasonal accommodation should be booked before flights.
